What Can an Interior Designer Do That I Can't Do Myself?
Let's start with something that might surprise you: Most of my clients have wonderful taste.
They know what they like. They have inspiration photos saved, Pinterest boards full of ideas, and a pretty good vision of what they want their home to feel like.
So why hire an interior designer?
Because having great taste and understanding how to bring a home together through the construction process are two very different things.
Interior design is about so much more than picking out pretty tile, coordinating paint colors, or finding the perfect sofa. It's about understanding how a home is built, how decisions affect one another, and how to create a space that's not only beautiful but functions for the people living in it.
And sometimes, it's about catching the things you didn't even know you needed to think about.
There Are More Decisions Than You Think
One of the biggest things homeowners underestimate when building or remodeling a home is the sheer number of decisions involved.
And I'm not just talking about countertops and cabinet colors.
We're talking about electrical locations, cabinetry dimensions, lighting placement, plumbing fixtures, flooring transitions, ceiling details, door swings, furniture layouts, and hundreds of other decisions that all need to work together.
Decision fatigue is a very real thing.
What makes it especially challenging is that these decisions don't happen independently. One selection often affects three or four others.
If you're unfamiliar with how a home comes together, understanding what needs to be decided, when it needs to be decided, and how it affects everything else can quickly become overwhelming.
Part of our job as interior designers is to guide that process, anticipate what's coming next, and help homeowners make informed decisions without feeling like they're managing a second full-time job.
We Think About the Things You Don't Know to Think About
Here's a perfect example: electrical outlets.
Not exactly the most exciting part of designing a home, right?
But their placement can make an enormous difference in how you actually live in your space.
Let's say you're building a new home and want a beautiful floating furniture arrangement in your living room. You'll probably want lamps on your end tables, which means you'll need floor outlets.
Here's the catch: Those floor outlet locations need to be determined before the concrete slab is poured.
That means we need to have a basic furniture layout established well before you're thinking about moving in.
We need to know where the sofa will sit, where the tables will go, and how to position those outlets so they're accessible without being in the middle of your walkway. Ideally, we can conceal them beneath furniture or an area rug while still keeping them accessible.
It's a small detail that requires planning very early in construction.
And it's just one example of why we encourage clients to bring an interior designer onto their team before construction begins.
We Understand How Design Decisions Affect Construction
Choosing something beautiful is one thing. Knowing how it will actually be installed and interact with everything around it is another.
Professional interior designers bring construction knowledge to the table.
We understand how finishes come together, where materials should transition, how cabinetry needs to function, and how design details can affect the work of different trades.
We also understand that not every beautiful material is appropriate for every application.
Here in Arizona, for example, climate, heat, and sun exposure are important considerations when selecting materials and finishes.
We help clients understand where it makes sense to invest, where they may be able to save, and which decisions will make the greatest impact on the finished home.
It's not just about what looks good. It's about what makes sense.
We Help You Know Where to Splurge and Where to Save
Let's talk about budgets, because this is a big one.
Hiring an interior designer is an additional investment, and I don't believe in telling homeowners that working with a designer automatically makes their project less expensive.
But I do believe that having an experienced professional involved can help you make smarter decisions about where your money goes.
Not every room needs the most expensive material. Not every design detail needs to be custom. And sometimes, spending a little more on the right thing upfront can make a significant difference in how your home functions and holds up over time.
We help clients identify the areas that deserve a larger investment and the areas where we can achieve a beautiful result without stretching the budget unnecessarily.
Just as importantly, thoughtful planning can help prevent expensive changes during construction.
Moving an outlet on paper is a lot easier than moving one after the walls are finished!
Our goal isn't to spend every dollar of your budget. It's to help you make the most of the investment you're already making in your home.
We Help You Plan Before You Build
At Ashley Marie Interiors, one of our biggest priorities is doing as much planning as possible before construction begins.
Our goal is to have a comprehensive specification binder completed before the project gets underway.
One of my favorite reactions from clients is when they see their specification book for the first time.
Most can't believe how big it is!
And I think that's when it really clicks just how much goes into building a home.
Every finish, fixture, and design detail needs to be thought through, documented, and communicated to the people bringing the home to life.
What looks like a simple, beautiful space in the finished home often represents hundreds of decisions made long before construction ever began.
Our specification books aren't just collections of pretty selections. They're a roadmap for the project, helping the builder, trades, and homeowner stay on the same page.
They also give the builder the information needed to prepare a more complete and accurate bid based on the intended design.
Why does that matter?
Because the more decisions we make before construction, the fewer unknowns we're carrying into the building process.
Of course, things will come up. It's construction! No matter how prepared everyone is, there will always be unexpected situations.
But we believe that putting in the work on the front end can help minimize surprises, reduce unnecessary changes, and create a much more enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
We would much rather spend extra time planning than have a homeowner making rushed decisions in the middle of construction.
We're Part of Your Construction Team
Something people don't always realize is how much communication an interior designer handles throughout a project.
We're attending job site meetings, participating in walkthroughs, reviewing details, answering questions, and working alongside builders and trades to make sure the design is being executed as intended.
In many ways, we're the bridge between the homeowner and the builder.
Homeowners don't always know how to communicate a particular design detail from a construction standpoint, and builders don't always know exactly what a homeowner is envisioning.
That's where we come in.
We help translate those ideas into actionable details, facilitate conversations, and address potential misunderstandings before they become bigger problems.
Ultimately, we're all working toward the same goal: a beautiful, well-built home and a happy homeowner.
And we believe the best projects happen when everyone on the team works together.
Building Your Dream Home Should Be Fun, Too
Let's talk about something that sometimes gets lost in the construction process: Building your dream home should be exciting!
Think about planning a vacation. Vacations can be expensive, right? You spend time planning, researching, and investing your money into an experience you're looking forward to enjoying.
So why should building your dream home be any different?
You're making a significant investment in a place where you'll create memories, raise a family, entertain friends, and spend years of your life. Yes, there will be budgets, deadlines, and unexpected challenges. It's construction, after all!
But that doesn't mean the entire experience needs to be stressful.
At Ashley Marie Interiors, we take our work seriously, but we don't take ourselves too seriously.
We genuinely love what we do, and just as importantly, we love the people we get to do it with. From our clients to the builders, architects, and trades we collaborate with, the relationships are a huge part of what makes this work so rewarding.
Our goal isn't just to help you create a beautiful home. It's to help you actually enjoy the experience of creating it.
Because when you look back on building your home, we want you to love the memories of the process just as much as the finished product.
So, Can You Design Your Own Home?
Absolutely.
You can have amazing taste, a clear vision, and a great eye for design.
But the real question isn't whether you're capable of choosing beautiful things.
It's whether you want to take on the responsibility of coordinating hundreds of interconnected decisions, navigating the construction process, and anticipating problems you may have never encountered before.
Hiring an interior designer isn't about giving up control of your home. It's about having someone in your corner who knows how to bring your vision to life.
At Ashley Marie Interiors, we specialize in custom homes and large-scale remodels throughout Scottsdale and the surrounding Phoenix area. We work alongside homeowners, builders, and architects to create thoughtfully planned homes that are as functional as they are beautiful.
And hopefully, we have a little fun along the way.
